Living in a Post-Pandemic Economy: How to Find Your New Outlook
The pandemic shook up a lot of shit. From how we relate to each other to how we do our jobs, everything has shifted.
Some of that shift is for the worst. In some scenarios, we lost loved ones, friends, and acquaintances. In others, tense political and human rights issues showed us new sides to people we’ve known for years, causing us to make hard choices about who we were allowing access to our lives.
But other shifts were for the better – like the exposure of true work-life wellness. With businesses and communities being on lockdown, we got to see how we could live if we said goodbye to societal norms and pressures and focused on what truly mattered to us. With the rise of remote work, we learned that we don’t have to spend hours a day commuting into an office in order to make an impact. We could do that from the comfort of our own homes, freeing up some time for us to explore other interests.
So, now that the world is falling back into the late-stage capitalist nightmare it was pre-pandemic, how do we keep ourselves from falling back into it, too? Here are some tips to change your outlook and find a way to thrive in this new post-pandemic economy.
Reevaluate Your Goals
Oftentimes, we do things because we think we’re supposed to or we think we have to. But the truth is, just because society, our parents, our partners, or our friends think we should do something, that doesn’t mean we actually have to do it.
Now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your goals. If you feel burnt out in your career, ask yourself why. What feels out of alignment for you? Is it the hours you’re working, the people you’re serving, or the job you’re doing? Take a chance to do a deep dive into your value system and determine what isn’t working for you anymore.
Define Your Own Success
It’s time to stop defining success by someone else’s logic. What our neighbor sees as successful could be the definition of failure for us – and that’s okay!
If a corner office in the C-suite is what makes you happy, go for it! If running an online business is what lights your fire, turn on that laptop! If being a stay-at-home mom and running the PTA is what gets you out of bed every day, girl, do it! It’s time to stop living for others and start living for ourselves.
Diversify Income Streams
As much as I hate to say it, gone are the days of working for one company for 30 years and retiring with a pension. As the world changes, we need to change the way we live in it.
For some of us, that may mean diversifying our income streams. Find ways to earn money doing things that you love to do. Want to teach a dance class? Sell your art at the local market? Grow vegetables in your garden? Do it! Not only will you find fulfillment doing something you love to do, but diversifying your income streams will also help relieve financial stress.
Prioritize Yourself
One thing we’re definitely leaving in the pre-pandemic world? Putting ourselves last! So many of us, especially as women, have been conditioned to put everyone and everything before ourselves.
Not anymore! Now we’re putting ourselves first. We’re maintaining a balanced diet of foods that make us feel good. We’re moving our bodies. We’re getting enough sleep, and we’re seeking out support when needed.
Get Ready to Realign Yourself
No matter what is important to you, I hope that you’ll take this opportunity to pursue it wholeheartedly. Because you’re more than your work title, your favorite hobby, or your role as a mom. You’re a woman who deserves true and complete happiness. You deserve fulfillment and if you need help, I’m here to help you find it.
